Murrieta

City of Murrieta History

Until recently the city of Murrieta had a fairly low population. The land that comprised the now Murrieta was originally purchased by Esequial Murrieta through the purchase of two Mexican land grants (Rancho Pauba and Rancho Temecula). In 1873 the properties were given to his younger brother, Juan Murrieta, who raised approximately 100,000 sheep.

The town continued grown in part to the discovery of a natural hot springs.  The residents took advantage of them and created the Murrieta Hot Springs Resort. This enterprise gained the attention on people across the country. Current this site is home to the Calvary Bible College, who has spent a significant amount of money updating the old resort.

When Instate 15 was completed in the early 1980’s Murrieta saw its first housing boom. Commuters from Riverside, Orange Country and San Diego began to relocate to the area and rapidly increased its size.  By 1990 the population had reach 24,000 and residence started a campaign for cityhood. On July 1, 1991 the City of Murrieta was established. According to the 2010 United States Census Murrieta boosted 103,466 residents, which makes it the largest city in Southwest Riverside County.

Golf

Within the city limits there are three golf courses. Bear Creek Golf & Country Club was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is located in the residential community of Bear Creek. Players such as Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Regan have made their attempt at this difficult course. The public California Oaks Golf Course is located in a senior residential community called The Colony. The last is SCGA Golf Course, an 18-hole public course.

Other diversions

Directly outside of the city is the Santa Rosa Plateau. This is an ecological reserve which is jointly owned by county and state governments, a private conservation group, and the local water district. It’s visitors can see the threatened Engleman Oak, endangered wildlife, both flora and fauna.
