Escondido
History
Founded in 1888, Escondido is one of the earliest cities to be established in San Diego County. The territory was initially settled by the Luiseno, who built villages and campsites along the creek running through most of the area. Most of these structures have been demolished by agriculture and development.
Downtown
With the opening of galleries, cafe’s and restaurants Downtown Escondido has become much more active. The Downtown Business Association hosts “Crusin Grand” every April through September. This is an event where the public can display and examine historic cars and hot rods. Every event has a focus on a featured attraction or car club. This ranges from sprint cars to antique fire trucks
Two museums are located in Grape Day Park, The Escondido History Center and the Escondido Children’s Museum. Patrons of the History Center can view the city’s first library, barn, Victorian house and the city’s orignal Santa Fe Depot. People can also review Escondido’s history by looking through maps, genealogical collections, photographs, yearbooks and directories. In the Children’s Museum, kids up to 10 years of age have access to natural and social science hands-on exhibits.
